The Ladder

A True Story By DC MORBY

The Ladder

One summer between my junior and senior years of high school, my band teacher hired me to paint his house. It was a beautiful day. The weather was perfect, the paint was fine, and the house was exactly what I expected. Then, without warning, the ladder slipped out from beneath me. I landed hard on my back because the ladder had been placed on unstable, rocky ground.

That experience taught me a lesson I have carried with me throughout my life. Most of the time, we focus on the ladder—our career, our opportunities, our goals, or the challenges in front of us. But the real issue is often the foundation beneath us. If the ground isn't solid, even the best ladder can't keep us from falling.

Years later, I realized there was a second lesson hidden in that experience. A ladder can be standing on solid ground and still lead to disappointment if it's leaning against the wrong wall. Many people spend years climbing the ladder of success only to discover they have been climbing toward the wrong destination.

This true story became one of the foundational principles of the V16 Leadership Platform. Success begins with a firm foundation, but lasting fulfillment comes from choosing the right wall before you begin to climb.

"Build on a firm foundation. Choose the right wall. Then climb with confidence."
